Since childhood, drivers have fascinated me. At one point, I remember telling my parents that I wanted to drive, once I get old.
What was a fascination at the time has helped me develop empathy towards drivers. They are some of the best advisors in the world.
Today, I am sharing the story of an Uber driver who I met in Mumbai about a year ago. I don’t remember his name, but I remember our talk very well.
He was a professional recruiter, who had hired thousands of people for several small businesses. He even gave me insights into local hiring ‘melas’. This was my first introduction to informal job fairs, where people looking for jobs just show up.
He then talked about how he was earning more than fifty thousand rupees a month, and had ambitions of buying his own car. Buying his own car would increase his earnings by about thirty percent, thus allowing him to buy a small apartment in a remote suburb of Mumbai.
Sounds familiar?
All of this brought me to a question - why was he driving a cab?
“The earnings are not bad. This is the easiest way to save money to buy an apartment,” he responded.
The world is full of ambitions, dreams and goals. When we talk to people, it is important to recognize that they have their own ambitions. Their own dreams.
After all, the world is more beautiful because of these dreams, right?
